Derby Fen

​

Derby Fen extends to 61 acres and measures approximately 650m x 350m and is designated open access land under the CROW act and everyone is welcome to walk on the fen at any time. Access to the Fen is through the kissing gate at the end of Fen Lane.

​

Derby Fen is also a nationally important site for conservation and is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

​

The Gaywood River runs along the southern edge and is home to water voles and kingfishers.

 

The dry sandy land next to the river is home to a large warren of rabbits who play an important role in managing the grassland.

 

Derby fen also hosts the greatest number of bird species of all of the fens.

 

Derby fen is a mixture of dry heath, wetland and wet woodland.
